HGV Tariffs : how does it works ?
The A63 motorway of the Landes is a road on which certain uses are subjected to toll. The toll consists of two barriers (Castets in the south and Saugnac-and-Muret in the north) for twelve entries/exits, thus leaving the possibility of many free local journies.
All infrastructures have a cost but this one can be dealt with by the taxpayer through taxes or the user through tolls. Where the tax forces households that rarely/never use the motorway to contribute, the toll makes it possible for nonresident vehicles to take part in the development and maintenance charges of the network. This reasoning is particularly adapted to A63 motorway of the Landes whose services benefit from great exchanges between the Iberian peninsula and the north of Europe in a very significant way.
The toll covers three distinct charges:
- Maintenance and care costs of the motorway, including not only the maintenance of the motorway, but also the maintenance of the accesses, the hydraulic or environmental work, or the cleanliness of the rest areas.
- The refunding cost of Atlandes' debt, corresponding to the financing of the building work but also of the contribution of 400 M€ for the development of the infrastructures of transport.

The rates are framed by the contract of concession (article 25).

They evolve according to taxation and price indexes.
For trucks, tariffs vary according to the Euro emission class.
Last, according to article 25.8 from concession contract, an extra amount can be charged – added to the fine – for excess weight vehicle that may ruin the infrastructure.
